At Gourmet Grocer, we love products that bring comfort, flavour and a real sense of care to the table. The kind of food that works for everyday snacking, thoughtful gifting, breakfast cupboards, coffee breaks and special moments shared with family and friends.
The Foods of Athenry is one of those brands.
Based on a family farm in Athenry, County Galway, The Foods of Athenry is an Irish family bakery known for its wholesome bakes, gluten-free treats, crackers, cereals, cookies and snack bars. What began as a farmhouse kitchen story has grown into one of Ireland’s best-known free-from bakeries, creating food that is inclusive, full of flavour and made with care.
For us at Gourmet Grocer, The Foods of Athenry is a brilliant example of Irish baking done properly: rooted in family, shaped by necessity, and created for people who believe free-from food should still taste genuinely delicious.
From Farmhouse Kitchen to Family Bakery
The Foods of Athenry story began on the Lawless family farm in County Galway.
In the early 2000s, Paul and Siobhan Lawless were facing an uncertain future in agriculture, while also becoming more interested in the connection between food and wellbeing due to childhood health issues within the family. Rather than stay still, they made a bold change.
In 2004, they sold their cows and transformed the old milking parlour on the farm into a bakery. From there, The Foods of Athenry was born.
It is a lovely example of Irish food innovation: taking a working farm, a family tradition of baking and a real-life need for better food, then turning it into something that could be enjoyed far beyond the family kitchen.
Inclusive Baking with Proper Flavour
The Foods of Athenry has become especially well known for its gluten-free and free-from baking.
Their range includes cookies, crackers, cakes, cereals, snack bars and gifts, with many products designed for people who follow gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, egg-free or vegan diets. Their gluten-free products are baked in a dedicated free-from facility on the family farm, with quality standards and independent auditing helping to give reassurance to customers who need to shop carefully.
That matters. For anyone with coeliac disease, food intolerances or dietary requirements, finding products that feel safe, reliable and enjoyable can make a real difference.
But what makes The Foods of Athenry stand out is that the products do not feel like a compromise. They are made to be enjoyed by everyone, not just those shopping from the free-from shelf.
Crackers, Cookies, Cereals and More
The Foods of Athenry range is full of practical, delicious products that fit easily into everyday life.
Their crackers and soda bread toasts are perfect for cheeseboards, grazing platters and casual entertaining. Their cookies and biscuit bars work beautifully with tea, coffee or a lunchbox treat. Their granolas, porridges and cereals make breakfast feel easy, wholesome and satisfying. Their snack bars are ideal for busy days, road trips, school bags, office drawers and weekend adventures.
It is a range that covers all the little food moments that make a day better.
Whether you are building a hamper, stocking up for guests, choosing something gluten-free, or simply looking for something tasty to enjoy with a cup of coffee, The Foods of Athenry has plenty to offer.

The Foods of Athenry is exactly the kind of producer we are proud to stock at Gourmet Grocer. It is Irish, family-run, thoughtful and full of products that customers can enjoy in lots of different ways.
We especially love how well the range fits into gifting and entertaining. Their crackers and soda bread toasts are brilliant with Irish cheese, chutneys, relishes, charcuterie and olives. Their sweet treats add a lovely handmade bakery feel to hampers, while their cereals and granolas are perfect for breakfast-style gifts or everyday cupboards.
For customers shopping with dietary requirements in mind, The Foods of Athenry also offers a reassuring choice. It allows people to pick up free-from products that still feel generous, premium and full of flavour.
That is what good food should do. It should make people feel included, considered and excited to eat.
Perfect for Hampers, Cheeseboards and Coffee Breaks
Some products are especially useful because they work in so many settings. The Foods of Athenry range does exactly that.
Add their soda bread toasts or crackers to a cheeseboard with Irish cheese, cured meats, pickles and preserves. Pair their cookies or biscuit bars with freshly brewed coffee for an easy afternoon treat. Include their granola or porridge in a breakfast hamper with honey, preserves and tea. Add snack bars to a gift box for someone who loves practical treats with a little wholesome feel.
Their products are also ideal for hosting. Keeping a packet of good crackers or gluten-free sweet treats in the cupboard means you always have something thoughtful to offer guests, especially when dietary needs are part of the conversation.
It is simple, useful food — but made with enough care to feel special.
A Galway Food Story Worth Celebrating
The Foods of Athenry is more than a bakery. It is a story of family, farming, resilience and inclusive Irish food.
From a converted milking parlour on a Galway farm to shelves across Ireland, Paul and Siobhan Lawless have built a brand around care, flavour and the belief that everyone deserves good food. Their products show that free-from baking can be full of texture, warmth and enjoyment.
