Meet the Maker: Mileeven Honey

Meet the Maker | Pantry, Sauces & Bakes

At Gourmet Grocer, we love products that bring natural sweetness, comfort and craft to the table. The kind of jar you can keep in the cupboard and reach for again and again, whether you are making breakfast, baking something special, building a cheeseboard or choosing a thoughtful gift.

Mileeven Honey is one of those products.

Based in Piltown, County Kilkenny, Mileeven is an Irish honey company with a story rooted in family, beekeeping and a love of proper honey. Established in 1988 by Eilis Gough, Mileeven began when her husband Joe’s beekeeping hobby grew from two hives in the back garden into something much bigger.

What started as a kitchen-table business selling Pure Irish Honey has grown into one of Ireland’s leading honey companies, now run by Eilis and her daughter Sarah.

For us at Gourmet Grocer, Mileeven Honey is a brilliant example of Irish food done with care: natural, versatile, full of flavour and made with a real respect for quality.

From Two Hives to a Honey Business

The Mileeven story began with an evening class.

Eilis and Joe Gough were living in Dublin when they decided to take up beekeeping as a way to avoid sitting in traffic after work. What began as a simple hobby soon became a real passion, especially for Joe, whose love of bees and honey continued to grow.

After moving to Piltown in County Kilkenny, the family had more space, and the two-hive hobby eventually turned into around 100 hives. From there, Mileeven Honey was born.

The name Mileeven comes from the Irish words “Mil”, meaning honey, and “Aoibhinn”, meaning delightful. It is a lovely name for a brand built around one of nature’s simplest pleasures.

Pure, Raw Irish Honey

Mileeven’s first product was Pure Irish Honey, and it remains one of their most loved products today.

Their Irish Honey is 100% pure and raw, made from native Irish bees feeding on spring and summer blossoms in the Sunny South East of Ireland. It has a beautiful medium golden colour and a floral taste that is balanced, natural and easy to enjoy.

Mileeven also works with local beekeepers for their Irish Honey, helping maintain a strong connection to Irish beekeeping and honey production.

This is honey that feels honest and familiar. It is sweet without being overpowering, full of natural character and perfect for everyday use.

A Range Full of Natural Sweetness

Over the years, Mileeven has grown its range beyond Pure Irish Honey, while keeping quality at the centre of everything they do.

Their collection includes pure honeys, organic honey, honeycomb, lavender honey, orange blossom honey, acacia honey and Manuka honey. They also create distinctive Irish products such as Honey with Jameson Irish Whiskey and Honey with Irish Mist Liqueur.

That variety makes Mileeven a lovely brand to explore. Some jars are perfect for everyday breakfasts, while others feel more luxurious and gift-worthy. Whether you prefer something light and floral, rich and aromatic, or infused with a little Irish warmth, there is a Mileeven honey to suit the moment.

Their honeys are tested to ensure authenticity and quality, and the brand has received recognition through awards including Great Taste Awards, Irish Food Awards and Gulfood Awards.

How to Enjoy Mileeven Honey

One of the best things about good honey is how versatile it is.

Drizzle Mileeven Honey over porridge, yoghurt, granola, pancakes or warm toast for a naturally sweet start to the day. Stir it into tea, hot lemon, coffee or warm milk. Use it in baking for cakes, biscuits, breads and traybakes, or add it to marinades, glazes and salad dressings.

It also works beautifully with savoury food. Pair honey with strong Irish cheese, soft goat’s cheese, charcuterie, roasted nuts, fresh fruit, crackers and crusty bread for a simple but memorable cheeseboard.

For entertaining, a good jar of honey can bring a lovely finishing touch to a grazing board. It adds sweetness, shine and balance, especially alongside salty, creamy or savoury flavours.

Why We Love Mileeven at Gourmet Grocer

Mileeven Honey is exactly the kind of product we are proud to stock at Gourmet Grocer. It is Irish, family-rooted, beautifully versatile and made with a clear respect for quality.

It sits perfectly alongside so many of our other favourite products, from Irish cheeses and artisan crackers to fresh bread, preserves, tea, coffee, chocolate, baking ingredients and hamper selections.

For customers building a Gourmet Grocer hamper, Mileeven Honey is a brilliant addition. It feels thoughtful, useful and special without being overly formal. A jar of honey works for almost everyone, whether they love breakfasts, baking, cheeseboards, hot drinks or simple pantry favourites.

For everyday shopping, it is just as useful. It is the kind of product that earns a regular place in the cupboard.

Perfect for Hampers, Baking and Breakfasts

Mileeven Honey is a natural choice for gifting. It has a strong Irish story, beautiful flavour and practical everyday appeal.

Add it to a breakfast hamper with coffee, tea, granola, preserves and biscuits. Include it in a cheeseboard hamper with crackers, chutneys, cheese and charcuterie. Pair it with baking ingredients for someone who loves making sweet treats at home.

It is also ideal for those small everyday rituals that make food feel better. A spoonful in tea, a drizzle over toast, a glaze on roasted carrots, or a little honey over yoghurt can make simple food feel warmer and more considered.

That is the charm of Mileeven. It is special, but never fussy.

A Delightful Irish Honey Story

Mileeven Honey is more than a jar on the shelf. It is a story of family, bees, Irish countryside and a hobby that grew into one of Ireland’s best-known honey businesses.

From two hives in a back garden to a leading honey company in County Kilkenny, Mileeven has stayed close to what matters most: pure honey, natural flavour and quality you can trust.

That is exactly the kind of food story we love to celebrate at Gourmet Grocer.

You can find Mileeven Honey at Gourmet Grocer, 10 High Street, Enniskillen. Call in to explore our range of Irish honey, preserves, pantry favourites, cheeses, crackers and carefully selected products, perfect for breakfasts, baking, hampers, gifting and everyday treats.
